Tovey died on Wednesday, two days after his 69th birthday, at his home in Barrington, Rhode Island, according to reliable sources.
Tovey was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma two years ago, and after surgery in June 2021, he was cancer-free for a short time.
The UK-based composer and conductor is survived by his son and two daughters as well as his wife Lana Penner-Tovey.
After a nationwide search, Tovey was named the orchestra’s sixth music director in its 72-year history last August.
Tovey previously led the BBC Concert Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Rhode Island Philharmonic, in addition to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
His last appearance with the orchestra was in April, during the season finale.
