Boris Johnson addressed his farewell speech to the nation, characterising himself as a “booster rocket that has served its purpose.”
“This is it, folks,” the outgoing prime minister said outside a crowded Downing Street.
Mr Johnson promised to “stand behind Liz Truss every step of the way” and urged the Conservative Party that “it is time to stand by” the next prime minister.
He praised his administration’s accomplishments, including Brexit, vaccine rollout, and reaction to the Ukraine crisis.
Boris condemned President Putin for rising energy prices and stated that Ms Truss and her administration “would do everything they can to get through this crisis.”
Mr Johnson hinted at his future ambitions, saying, “On the question of bouncing around in future occupations, let me remark that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has done its duty.”
“And now I’ll be softly reentering the atmosphere and splashing down in some remote and hidden part of the Pacific.”
In reference to his removal, Mr Johnson remarked that in this “relay race” of governance, they “changed the rules halfway through.”
