In the Bono region, meters were stolen in 2023, according to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in the Sunyani area. The company suffered losses of over GHC 200,000.

Approximately 88 meters have been reported stolen, according to NEDCo management. The company is working with security agencies to stop the tide, according to Eugene Addo-Odoi, the NEDCo area manager for Sunyani. “Our meters are being stolen at an increasing rate as of late.”

The number of stolen meters was quite low previously, but it is now occurring more frequently than anticipated. Because the meters are meant to be accessible to officials and customers alike, we do not advocate for them to be located in remote locations.

This makes the meters visible to other individuals who might be considering stealing them. We’re collaborating with the security services, and we can guarantee you that we’ll apprehend the offenders quickly,” Odoi stated.

According to Zakaria Amiratu, the customer service officer for the Sunyani area, from January to December of last year (2023), approximately 88 meters were reported stolen, costing NEDCo more than GHC21,000.

“We received 88 letters with police extracts from customers whose meters were stolen between January and December 2023. When you take these meters, the NEDCo authorities spend over GHC211,000 to replace them for the customers.”

“Therefore, it’s expensive for us because we could have purchased other materials with this amount of money,” Amiratu remarked.

Amiratu claims that more than a thousand meters have been obtained illegally in the Sunyani Municipality.

She advised clients to pay at the counter of their office directly and to ignore any calls asking them to deposit additional service fees into any mobile money account number.

It is concerning that the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is seeing an increase in the number of stolen meters and cables.

The NEDCo recently voiced their displeasure over the widespread theft of their cables and asked locals to assist in putting an end to the threat.
