In 2012, the singer underwent liver and kidney transplants.

Right after the surgery was successful, Rydell told the local CBS affiliate in his native Philadelphia that his doctor gave him “maybe a month” to live if he did not undergo the surgeries.

“It’s truly a miracle,” said Rydell, who came out of the Philadelphia scene that also spawned Fabian and Frankie Avalon.

Why did Bobby Rydell have a liver and kidney transplant?

Doctors who treated Bobby at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital disclosed in an interview that they were able to use part of the donor liver to help Rydell and the other part to help a child.

The singer said he wanted to help raise awareness about organ donation.
