Sir Robert Charlton, better known as Bobby Charlton, was a former English football player and manager who was regarded as one of the best ever. On October 11, 1937, he was born in Ashington, Northumberland, England, and he died on October 21, 2023. Between 1957 and 1973, he participated in 106 international matches for England, a record for the nation at the time.
For Manchester United, Charlton played forward from 1954 until his retirement in 1973. Eight regular Manchester United players perished in an airplane crash near Munich, West Germany, on February 6, 1958. Charlton survived to share the story. His outstanding play helped his team, which consisted mainly of reserves, advance to the Football Association Cup final that year.
Charlton was a member of the English national team that won the World Cup in 1966. Because of his achievements, he was named European Footballer of the Year. Charlton captained Manchester United in 1968, when the team became the first English club to win the European Cup, which is now known as the Champions League.
