Bobby “Blue” Bland was the stage name for Robert Calvin Bland. He was an American blues singer. Robert Calvin Bland was born Robert Calvin Brooks on January 27, 1930. He passed away on June 23, 2013.
Bland created a style that combined blues, R&B, and gospel. Amidst the greatest storytellers of blues and soul music, he “produced turbulent arias of love, betrayal, and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed,” according to one description.
Some people referred to him as the “Sinatra of the Blues” and the “Lion of the Blues.” Nat King Cole also had an impact on his musical style.
