Bob Blizzard attended Culford School in Bury St Edmunds and the University of Birmingham, where he received a BA in 1971.
He went on to teach English at Southfields Secondary School in Gravesend, Kent, after graduating.
In 1976, he was appointed Head of the English Department at Crayford School on Iron Mill Lane in Bexley.
He became Head of English at Lynn Grove High School in Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk, in 1986.
While an MP, he helped secure money for the Orbis Energy Centre in Lowestoft and pushed for a third water crossing in the town, although that was not authorized until 2015, and construction is now well underway.
“I would not have entered politics if it hadn’t been for Bob Blizzard’s support,” said Peter Byatt, head of the Labour group on East Suffolk Council, the successor to Waveney District Council.
