Baffert grew up on his family’s ranch in Nogales, Arizona, where they kept cattle and poultry.
He worked as a jockey for $100 a day in informal Quarter Horse races on the outskirts of Nogales while he was in his teens.
From then, he progressed to racing at sanctioned circuits, where he won his first race at the age of 17 in 1970.
Baffert received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program, married, and began training quarter horses at a farm in Prescott, Arizona.
By the age of 20, he had established a reputation as a trainer and was engaged to manage the stables of other trainers.
