The deputy majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has decided to block the third reading of the anti-LGBTQ bill, but Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, the chairman of the constitutional, legal, and parliamentary affairs committee of Parliament, has stated that this decision will not succeed.
Afenyo Markin argued that while he is not opposed to the bill that would promote proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, he is against the part that would imprison those who are charged with supporting or participating in LGBTQ activities.
On Friday, February 16, Anyimadu-Antwi, in an interview with Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show, stated he did not anticipate the legislature endorsing Afenyo Markin.
“Therefore, I think the best argument is Afenyo’s, which is very sound and says that since we made this a crime, you can punish them by giving them community service, which is something we still need to work on,” he remarked.
The sponsors of the private member bill do not want to negotiate and believe that their proposal must pass, so even though Honorable Afenyo-Markins may try, he will not be successful and will not have the support.
“We will have to put it to a vote and that is what I say, I don’t foresee the House voting in his favor,” Anyimadu-Antwi continued.
