Mawuli Kuwornu, a 33-year-old blind farmer from Honuta-Asifiakofe in the Ho-West District of the Volta Region, has been making waves with his successful commercial farming ventures.
Despite his visual impairment, Mawuli has been actively involved in farming for the past 10 years, showing determination and resilience in pursuing his passion.
However, Mawuli expressed disappointment in the lack of support he has received from the government in terms of farming inputs such as fertilizers and spraying machines. He mentioned that his only helper is his elderly mother, who struggles to provide for their family and assist him on the farm. In light of this, Mawuli appealed to the government, NGOs, and philanthropists to support him by providing the necessary resources to enhance his farming activities.
After losing his sight while working as an apprentice in a mechanic shop in Accra, Mawuli returned home and decided to pursue farming, much to the initial disbelief of his mother. Despite the challenges he faces, including the absence of access roads to his farm and exploitation by market women, Mawuli remains committed to his work and prefers sharing his produce with neighbors and friends rather than selling it at low prices.
Mawuli’s parents shared their pride in his determination to succeed as a blind farmer, with his father calling on the Ministry of Agriculture to offer guidance and support to help him achieve his goals. A friend and pastor also appealed to the public to assist Mawuli in his farming endeavors, highlighting the potential for him to excel in his chosen profession with the right support.
In addition to his farming aspirations, Mawuli expressed his desire to find a life partner and promised that any interested lady would not go hungry as he is a dedicated farmer.
