For almost 50 years, Jacksonville attorney Bill Sheppard was recognized for utilizing the United States Constitution to battle civil rights violations in Jacksonville and across Florida.
In the 1970s, Sheppard’s was Florida’s first integrated law practice. The company handled oppression and racial discrimination complaints.
Sheppard’s cases resulted in the legalization of same-sex marriage in Florida, the federal control of state prisons, the construction of a less congested county jail, and the city entering into a consent agreement over its discrimination against Black firemen.
