Actress and entrepreneur Beverly Afaglo has made a bold decision to completely steer clear of Facebook due to the intense hostility and insults she faced on the platform.
In an interview on Adom TV’s Okukuseku with Emelia Brobbey, Beverly revealed that she became a victim of cyberbullying after a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist her in rebuilding her life following a devastating house fire in 2021.
The unfortunate incident occurred when Beverly lost her house to a four-hour fire that consumed all her possessions. She took to Instagram to share the heart-wrenching experience of losing her kitchen, clothes, and other valuable items in the blaze. Despite the traumatic night that left her with nothing salvageable due to safety concerns, Beverly’s colleague Yvonne Nelson came up with the idea of a GoFundMe campaign to help her start afresh.
Initially hesitant about accepting help through the campaign, Beverly eventually agreed, only to face a barrage of insults and accusations on Facebook. The backlash from social media users was unexpected and hurtful, prompting Beverly to make the tough decision to stop using Facebook altogether for the sake of her mental well-being.
“People insulted me on Instagram and other apps, but Facebook was the worst. I didn’t know where the attacks were coming from because I didn’t understand why I was being attacked when I had lost everything,” Beverly shared. Since the tragic event in August 2021, she has chosen to stay away from Facebook to protect her mental health from further harm.
