Bette Midler born December 1, 1945 is an American singer, actress, comedian and author. Midler, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, started her acting career in a number of off-off-Broadway productions before appearing in Fiddler on the Roof and Salvation on Broadway in the late 1960s.
Her family was one of the few Jewish families in a mostly Asian neighborhood. Her father, Fred Midler, worked as a painter at a Navy base in Hawaii and was also a house painter. Her mother, Ruth (née Schindel), was a seamstress and stay-at-home mom.
Midler has received numerous honors over the course of her career, which has spanned more than five decades. These include four Golden Globe Awards, three Grammy Awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and a Kennedy Center Honor, in addition to two Academy Award nominations and a British Academy Film Award.
