Berty Gunathilake was a Sri Lankan actor and comedian who died on Sunday, March 6, 2022.
He was born in Ampitiya, Kandy, on August 2, 1924. Gunathilake attended Ampitiya Primary School, Kandy’s Sri Sangaraja Maha Pirivena, and the Institute of Indigenous Medicine.
He then worked as an Assistant Teacher at Kuliyapitiya’s Galpola Vidyalaya.
In 1947, he was connected with Radio Ceylon through the Lama Pitiya programme, and his comic show, Vihilu Thahalu in 1954.
He rose to prominence as a result of his several hilarious parts in the ‘Vinoda Samaya’ comedy.
He also starred in the 1951 film Banda Nagarayata Pemineema and he later appeared in numerous more comic roles in films such as Pem Mal Maala, Palama Yata, Mana Mohini, and Somi Boys.
