Congresswoman Johnson is an American politician who represents Texas’s 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

She began her work at the V.A. Hospital in Dallas as the first female African-American Chief Psychiatric Nurse.

She was the first nurse ever elected to the Texas State House in 1972, and she repeated the feat when she was elected to the Texas Senate in 1986.

She was the first African-American and first female Ranking Member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee from 2011 until 2018.

Johnson is the highest-ranking Texan on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, as well as the first nurse elected to the United States Congress.

Bernice Johnson is currently serving her 15th term representing the 30th Congressional District of Texas.

Johnson graduated from A.J. Moore High School at the age of 16 and proceeded to Indiana to attend Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame.

She transferred to Texas Christian University, from which she received a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The Southern Methodist University is where she got a Master of Public Administration in 1976.
