Benedict Cumberbatch was born in London, England, on July 19, 1976, to Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham. Tracy Peacock from his mother’s first marriage was his half-sister.

He attended Brambletye School in West Sussex as well as Harrow School.
He continued his education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts where he earned an MA in classical acting. He later studied drama at the University of Manchester.
