The Bechem Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) has awarded GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties each to four of its students who are accused of gang-raping a first-year student, age fifteen, according to the Duayaw-Nkwanta Circuit Court.
The court chaired by Justice Akosua Serwaa Sarfo also granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties and one to be justified to two other suspects, Hamida Kyeremaa and another (name withheld), who were accused of aiding and abetting crime.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) has learned that although the hearings were held behind closed doors on Monday, the court ordered Agyem Frimpong, Emmanuel Ankama, one Osman, Hamida, and the other suspect to stay in police prison until they fulfilled the requirements of their bail.
The gang boss is the subject of a manhunt by the police for one more suspect in the case.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daniel Gadzepke, the prosecutor, informed the GNA over the phone that the suspects’ plea would be taken during a case management conference at the following hearing.
On Monday, March 18, 2024, they would be back in front of the court.
When this report was filed, DSP Gadzepke stated that none of the suspects had been able to comply with the bail requirements and that they would be placed under jail remand if they couldn’t.
Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024, five of the suspects—all final-year students—are accused of gang-raping the gullible victim in a run-down building on the school’s grounds after accomplice Hamida enticed and turned the victim over to them.
The victim’s rape was verified by a medical report from the Duayaw-Nkwanta St John of God Catholic Hospital.
