In a recent press conference held by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, emphasized the importance of fact-checking information, especially as the country approaches elections.

Dwumfour stressed that accurate reporting is crucial for maintaining public trust and upholding the credibility of journalism.

Joined by the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) and the Media Foundation for West Africa, the GJA condemned the growing instances of irresponsible journalism in the country. Dwumfour urged journalists, media practitioners, and organizations to be cautious with their reporting and avoid making statements that could incite violence.

He clarified that this caution should not be perceived as a limitation on free expression but rather as a call for responsible journalism. Dwumfour also highlighted the need for media outlets to fact-check their sources, citing an incident involving inaccurate reporting on Chef Smith.

Sulemana Braimah, the Executive Secretary of the Media Foundation for West Africa, echoed Dwumfour’s sentiments, warning that unethical statements by journalists could have serious repercussions, including the revocation of licenses. Braimah emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent violations and uphold media professionalism.

Overall, the GJA remains committed to defending media freedom and advocating for responsible journalism. The call for fact-checking and ethical reporting is essential to ensure the media’s credibility and uphold democratic principles in Ghana.
