Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to announce his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections in June, according to the Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and a senior campaign aide to the Vice President, Sammy Awuku.
Awuku revealed that Dr. Bawumia has already made a decision regarding his running mate and that an announcement is expected soon. This disclosure comes amidst speculations within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political analysts about the delay in naming a running mate.
During an interview on Yen Nsempa on Onua FM, Awuku pointed out that Dr. Bawumia is well within the appropriate timeframe to reveal his running mate. He referenced the example of Nana Akufo-Addo, who selected Dr. Bawumia as his running mate in August 2008 for that year’s election, to show that the timing of such announcements can vary.
“We are very much within the timeline. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines,” Awuku explained.
He further emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s main competitor in the upcoming elections is not his running mate but rather the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama. “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is in a contest with John Mahama. They are the two people who are going to be on the ballot paper, and these are people we have seen before. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s competition, his contest is the former president,” Awuku stated.
Awuku confirmed that the announcement of Dr. Bawumia’s running mate will be made in June. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
