Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has made a commitment to the people of Cape Coast and its surrounding areas by promising to establish a new teaching hospital in the region.

This announcement was made during a meeting with the Central Regional House of Chiefs as part of his two-day tour in the area.

The proposed medical facility will be built on the University of Cape Coast campus and will be modeled after the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Once completed, the hospital will serve as a quaternary medical and research center, providing training, research, and high-quality patient care services to the people of the Central Region and beyond.

Emphasizing the importance of the health sector, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the health status of all citizens, regardless of their location, gender, or political affiliation. He highlighted the government’s goal of achieving universal health coverage and promoting a healthy population.

The Vice President also stressed the need to strengthen the local capacity within the healthcare sector, stating that the country should not rely on other nations for healthcare support. He mentioned the ongoing Agenda 111 project, which aims to establish a hospital in every district, with approximately 87 hospitals currently under construction nationwide.

In addition to the hospital projects, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the government’s digitalization efforts in the healthcare sector. This includes the networking of hospitals, deployment of medical drones, and the establishment of an e-pharmacy platform to improve healthcare accessibility for all citizens.

Looking ahead, the Vice President proposed integrating medical records and patient history into a centralized database accessible by networked hospitals to facilitate seamless information sharing. He commended the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for digitizing its operations to combat fraudulent claims and enhance healthcare accessibility for those in need.
