Bawumia pledges full Ghanaian ownership of natural resources if elected president

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his commitment to ensuring that mineral resources in Ghana are fully owned by Ghanaians if he is elected into power.

This assurance follows concerns that Ghanaians do not have complete ownership of the country’s minerals within the current mining sector framework.

Speaking during discussions with religious leaders on his inaugural regional tour in the Eastern Region on April 29, 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of reshaping Ghana’s natural resource management to guarantee total ownership and control by Ghanaians.

He stated, “I am going to refocus our paradigm for natural resource management. For too long, Ghana has not fully capitalized on the benefits of our natural resources.”

“Since the era of the Portuguese in the 15th century, gold has been extracted from Ghana without much benefit to us. I intend to change that narrative by placing a stronger emphasis on the ownership of our natural resources.”

“It seems as though we currently do not have ownership of our natural resources. I believe that through exploration, with an emphasis on empowering our universities and the geological service department, we can uncover seven gold belts that remain undiscovered. Once we identify these resources, the new policy will ensure that they are 100% owned by Ghanaians,” he affirmed.

Dr. Bawumia also assured the nation that the ongoing power challenges will soon be resolved, guaranteeing a stable and uninterrupted power supply for all Ghanaians.

He added, “I acknowledge the existing challenges and we are committed to addressing them. Currently, we are facing power issues, but according to the information I have received from the Minister for Energy, these challenges will soon be a thing of the past.
