Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s spokesperson, Gideon Boako, has explained why his boss decided to enact policies that are at odds with the current Akufo-Addo administration if he were elected president.
Mr. Boako asserts that a new vision does not always entail disapproval of the policies of the current administration.
He felt that even though his boss was a key member of the current administration as Vice President, he did not have the constitutional authority to carry out his ideas and beliefs. As a result, he felt that as the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he would lead Ghana differently if given the go-ahead.
Every leader has a unique vision, which is why the phrase “new king, new law” is used. The Vice President also stated that “the circumstances and instances that occasioned certain dreams and visions of the incumbent government will differ from the circumstances that will exist when he becomes president” as the foundation for his vision. As such, he intends to carry on with some positive aspects of this administration.”
The Vice President made several pledges in an address to kick off his campaign, called Bawumia Speaks, including the removal of certain tax laws, such as the contentious E-Levy, the Emission Tax, and the 15% VAT on electricity.
While many have applauded him for these pledges, some are dubious. His detractors have questioned why he chose to repeal these taxes given that President Akufo-Addo, his boss, was in charge of their enactment and execution.
A spokesman for Dr. Bawumia responded on JoyNews’ PM Express, stating that the Vice President is only an advisor when it comes to the nation’s economic management and that he is free to express his ideas.
“Therefore, you are not necessarily saying that what your boss is doing is wrong if your boss has a vision and you say that, given the opportunity, this is the way I want to go.
He stated on Wednesday, “It could also be that there are some implementation limitations with the vision that is currently being implemented, but we should not conclude that there is something wrong just because Vice President Bawumia is showing some policy departure from what is being done today.”
