The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Bawku, Amadu Hamza Zanga, claims that the three young men who were shot by some soldiers were fighting with the armed forces.
The MCE said he had questioned the local military commander about gunshots he had heard the day before, a few meters from his house, in an interview with Newsfile on JoyNews.
Information given to Mr. Zanga stated that the officers attacked by the deceased men only took defensive action. He said that gunfire had been heard in Bawku days earlier, though the cause of the gunfight was still unknown.
“They spoke with a couple of boys, the military commander on the ground told me. I exclaimed, “What guys?” Where are they coming from? Being strangers, it was difficult to pinpoint their exact origins. They acknowledged that they had been fired at by both the boys and the soldiers when I asked them what had happened.
That allowed them to neutralize them. They called the police to come get them after three people died as a result. This is exactly what the military commander told me. The MCE told Samson Lardy Anyenini, the host of the program, “I went back to the police commander, and he told me the same story.”
Even though the cause of the altercation was kept a secret, Mr. Zanga believes that a series of incidents in Bawku that ended in some people’s deaths may have contributed to the fight.
He claimed that three days earlier, six people had been shot close to a police station, and that one man and another man from Mamprusi had been killed a week earlier.
This resulted in the instant death of one Mossi man and the death of a 17-year-old the following morning. According to Mr. Zanga, four of the victims are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
“After that, we found out about another incident in Bolgatanga that was somehow related to the Bawku case. He went on, “Therefore, gunfire broke out throughout Bawku.”
