An additional attack in Bawku this afternoon claimed the lives of at least six people. Gunmen opened fire on a bus heading to a market in Binduri. This follows 48 hours of relative calm in the town. The victims are two males and four females.
According to our sources, the incident occurred when gunmen ambushed a bus transporting passengers to a market in the nearby Binduri District and opened fire indiscriminately on the vehicle.
Hamza Amadu, the Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, confirmed the distressing incident to the media.
Mr Amadu expressed concern, acknowledging that the current casualty count could rise, implying the possibility of additional victims.
It is anticipated that the authorities will initiate inquiries to ascertain the reasons behind the assault. In a related incident, a bus carrying roughly 45 students from the Presbyterian Nurses Training College, Bawku, near Binduri in the Upper East was ambushed by two gunmen on motorcycles on Friday, January 19.
The students sustained multiple injuries in the attack, and they were immediately transported to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital for medical attention.
On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, two persons in the Upper East Regional town were attacked by unidentified gunmen and killed. At midday, unknown gunmen started shooting at tricycle drivers near the Bawku Community Center.
Six shots were fired in this incident; one victim died at the scene instantly, and the other died this morning while receiving treatment.
As of January 18, five persons had perished in less than 48 hours, with three more deaths. Claiming to have found weapons on them, some soldiers opened fire on them.
“Directly engaging the military is a development that could result in fatal consequences; as troops will spare no opportunity to defend themselves as well as protect,” the Ghana Armed Forces stated in support of their action.
