Barry Humphries was an Australian actor best known for playing the sarcastic talk show hostess Dame Edna Everage. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on February 17, 1934, and passed away in Sydney, Australia, on April 22, 2023.

Humphries initially enrolled at Melbourne University but later dropped out to focus on his acting career. He made his stage debut in 1953 at Melbourne’s Union Theatre before starting a tour with a theatrical group. In The Demon Barber (1959), he made his stage debut in London. Later, in addition to more one-man theatre performances, he appeared in several different Oliver! productions.

In 1955, he developed the Edna Everage persona for a sketch he was working on. Humphries created his persona in order to mock the culture and values of his parent’s generation. Despite her occasional haughtiness, disdain, and interference, Edna was endearing and genuine.
