Barry Garron, the genial Midwesterner who served as The Hollywood Reporter’s chief television critic for more than a decade, has passed on at the age of 72.

According to his daughter, Rachel Dain, Garron died Thursday (June 23)morning at a rehabilitation facility in Gilbert, Arizona, after being hospitalized over the Memorial Day weekend.
He had Crohn’s disease since his twenties and had also battled cancer.

Garron was known among his coworkers and friends for his easygoing demeanor, encyclopedic knowledge, and passion for television, which he used to land jobs as a critic for The Kansas City Star and then THR.
Barry Garron is said to be survived by his only daughter Rachel, who worked as a production engineer for KCAL-TV and KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, as well as his son-in-law David; granddaughters Sierra and Alisa; brother David; sister-in-law Myrna; niece Courtney; and nephew Daniel.
Sandi, his wife of 38 years, died in 2010. In the Los Angeles area, she and Garron were founding members of Temple Shir Chadash and Temple Beth Torah.
