On March 20, 2024, Speaker Alban Bagbin presented an official statement on a recent letter from the presidency before adjourning the House indefinitely. The Majority Caucus in Parliament responded sharply to developments in the House.
The Caucus accused Bagbin of unilaterally adjourning the House, a move they claim weakens the government, in a statement dated March 20, 2024.
“Mr. Speaker’s decision to adjourn the House without consulting its members, particularly the Leadership, is highly arbitrary, capricious, and undemocratic,” stated point 10 of their 13-point statement. It has always been standard procedure for the Chair to manage House business with guidance from the Leadership of the House.”
The House’s listed company was forced to be canceled according to Bagbin’s ruling. Tax waivers, paper-laying, bill-consideration, overdue IDA facility, and ministerial nomination approval are a few examples.
“The consequences are clear that the economy will suffer and government business will be undermined because of the pleasure of one man,” the eleventh item stated.
Additionally, the Majority charged that the Minority was supporting the Speaker due of their excessive desire to seize power by inciting animosity toward the administration.
