Nigerian music sensations Ayra Starr and Tems have been named the most streamed Nigerian artistes globally by Spotify, a leading global music streaming platform.
The announcement was made by Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa, at an event in Lagos on Wednesday, July 10. Okumu revealed that both Tems and Ayra Starr had made it to Spotify’s music global impact list for the top 30 artistes with the biggest global numbers for the first half of 2024.
Rauw Alexandro and Ayra Starr’s “Santa” claimed the top spot on the list, with Ayra Starr’s “Comma” following closely in second place. Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” secured the third position, showing the rising popularity of Nigerian music on a global scale.
Other notable entries on the list included Luciano and Omah Lay’s “Another Vibe” at fourth place, Savage and Burna Boy’s “Metro Booming Just Like Me” at fifth, and Tyla and Tems’s “No.1” at sixth.
According to Okumu, Spotify’s global Impact List in Nigeria recognizes the top 30 tracks from Nigeria that have had the most significant global impact on the platform in the first half of 2024. The list features Nigerian tracks released between January 1 and June 30 that have garnered significant international listenership.
Nigerian music, particularly Afrobeats, continues to captivate global audiences with its infectious rhythms, compelling storytelling, and innovative sound fusions. Its ability to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries has impressed music lovers worldwide.
