Zawahiri was killed in a CIA drone strike in Kabul over the weekend, according to officials familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence.

After the September 11 attacks, the U.S. State Department offered a US$25 million reward for information or intelligence leading to Ayman al-Zawahiri’s capture. He was put under worldwide sanctions in 1999 by the Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee as a member of al-Qaeda.
