Avraham Shochat, the former minister of finance and infrastructure, passed away last week, almost bringing an end to an era.

The cause of his death has not been disclosed yet. Israel’s final Labor prime minister, Ehud Barak, led the country from 1999 to 2001.There are few still living Labor Party stalwarts who served as ministers or Knesset members in the governments of Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, and Barak.

Shochat, who was born in Tel Aviv on June 14, 1936, and his spouse Tama were two of the thirty founding families that came to establish a city in the desert.
Nevertheless, he realized Arad’s promise and, in his 20 years as mayor, oversaw the city’s population growth and good reforms. The fact that Arad’s climate was thought to be good for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions was another benefit.
