Foster, a Miles College alumnus, was pursuing her master’s degree in teaching two years after a federal court declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.
She was expelled for her safety only three days after enrolling at the university.
Lucy Foster earned her master’s degree in elementary education at the University of Alabama in 1991, three decades after she was forced to leave university.
The university ultimately erected a historic marker in front of the education building in 2017 at the request of campus activists and lecturers to emphasize her significance to the university’s history.
She received an honorary doctorate degree from the institution in 2019. She was 92 years old.
