Plaza was given its name after Bread’s song “Aubrey.” Ismael, her paternal grandfather, arrived in the continental United States when he was 17 years old. He was created in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Her mother’s background is a mix of Irish and English. She also acknowledged that she was a Taino descendant. Since 2011, Plaza has been dating writer and director Jeff Baena.

In an interview with The Advocate in 2016, she stated: “Girls like me, that much is obvious. Hey, I like them too. I’m in love with both guys and women. I’m forced to.”
