The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Kathleen Addy, has emphasized the importance of protecting media freedom in a democratic country.

Addy made these remarks at JoyNews’s national dialogue on ‘Defending Media Freedom’ on August 29, where she highlighted that attacking the media or journalists poses a threat to democracy.

She stressed that a free media is essential for democracy to thrive and urged stakeholders to take action against any form of violence or attacks on the media.

Addy emphasized that normalizing violence against the media would compromise the safety and well-being of the entire country.

As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, Addy called for a peaceful electoral process, urging citizens to refrain from violence regardless of the election outcomes.

She also emphasized the need to combat misinformation and disinformation, urging a collaborative effort to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

Addy’s remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding media freedom and ensuring a peaceful democratic transition in Ghana. As the country navigates through political tensions and uncertainties, the protection of media freedom remains paramount to safeguarding democracy. Let us all work together to promote a free and fair electoral process and uphold the principles of democracy.
