Nigerian politician and businessman Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946, in Jada.
His political career began in the early 1980s when he worked behind the scenes on Bamanga Tukur’s gubernatorial campaign, canvassing for votes and contributing to the cause.
Atiku Abubakar eventually entered mainstream politics, campaigned for governor of Adamawa State in 1990, 1996, and 1998, but lost.
He was chosen to be Olusegun Obasanjo’s running partner in the 1999 presidential election after winning the 1998 election, and he was re-elected in 2003. From 1999 until 2007, Atiku served as Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria’s vice president.
Atiku was the Action Congress’ presidential candidate in the 2007 presidential election, however he finished third behind Umaru Yar’Adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

Atiku Abubakar was born in Jada, Nigeria to Garba Abubakar (father) and Aisha Kande (mother).
His father was a Fulani trader and farmer (he died in 1957 by drowning while crossing a river to Toungo, a neighbouring village to Jada).
Atiku was named after his paternal grandfather Atiku Abdulqadir who hails from Wurno, Sokoto State. Not much is known about his mother.
