The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed disappointment in former Attorney-General and first Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu for his recent actions.

In an interview on Accra-based JoyNews, Mr Nketia stated that his faith in Mr Amidu’s principles has been severely shaken following his petition to have the current Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng removed from office.

Mr Amidu’s petition, submitted to President Nana Akufo-Addo, alleged various breaches by Mr Agyebeng, including procurement law violations and abuses involving judges and the administration of justice. Additionally, Mr Amidu accused Mr Agyebeng of violating citizens’ rights and making improper appointments to the office of the Special Prosecutor.

Mr Nketia expressed confusion over Mr Amidu’s motives, questioning why the former Special Prosecutor would petition the President to address perceived corrupt acts, especially after previously describing the President as the “Mother serpent of corruption.” He stated that Mr Amidu’s actions have weakened his credibility and undermined his past efforts to fight corruption.

President Akufo-Addo forwarded Mr Amidu’s petition to the Chief Justice for action, sparking concerns about the haste with which the President acted. The Chief Justice has requested Mr Agyebeng’s comments to determine if a prima facie case has been established.

Mr Nketia criticized Mr Amidu for potentially becoming a tool for the President to target those fighting corruption, highlighting the need for solidarity among anti-corruption advocates. The situation has raised questions about the independence of the Special Prosecutor’s office and the government’s commitment to fighting corruption effectively.
