In advance of the elections in December, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, the deputy minister of foreign affairs and the current member of parliament for Asante Mampong, has been re-elected as the parliamentary candidate.
In Saturday’s primary, Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong received 555 votes, winning. Dennis Kwakwa, a close competitor, received 167 votes. Internal discord caused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to first postpone the primary.
Judge Georgina Mensah-Datsa led a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal that denied an injunction that thirty-five disgruntled NPP members from the Asante Mampong Constituency had requested. The Court emphasized that there is room for reconciliation, pointing out that all parties involved in the dispute belong to the same political party.
Since February 2022, the disgruntled members have filed a lawsuit, mostly for problems pertaining to executive elections at polling places. The NPP has confirmed that the primaries will take place again on Saturday, February 17, 2024, now that the legal barrier has been lifted.
Dennis Kwakwa, a former NPP communications officer in the Ashanti Region, faced off against Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong.
Delegates were urged by the NPP to maintain decorum during the election process. This opinion was also expressed by Paul Yandoh, the NPP’s director of communications for the Ashanti region.
