Football analyst Osei Owusu Bempah has expressed his disappointment with former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah for accepting a role with Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Team. In an interview on LUV FM, Bempah highlighted the team’s poor season and attributed it to the skeletal management.
After the dissolution of Kotoko’s board in September 2023, Asantehene appointed a four-member IMC with Appiah as the leader. However, Appiah’s decision to accept a three-year coaching deal in Sudan shortly after raised eyebrows.
Kotoko has only managed to win one out of nine second-round matches, putting pressure on the management team. Bempah pointed out that the issues plaguing the team go beyond just players and coaches; the absence of Appiah, who is often abroad on other duties, has added to the challenges.
Bempah questioned Appiah’s ability to effectively manage the team from a distance, stating, “You think as a Technical Director of a club you can’t give technical advice when you are watching games on TV.” He emphasized the importance of having a hands-on approach when running a club like Kotoko, and expressed surprise that Appiah did not suggest other candidates for the role to Asantehene.
The football analyst also highlighted the importance of having a former Kotoko player with a technical background in the position, suggesting that Appiah’s absence is impacting the team’s performance.
