Professional boxer Artur Asilbekovich Beterbiev was born in Canada on January 21, 1985. With the IBF, WBC, and WBO titles under his belt since 2017, he is the undisputed light heavyweight champion.
Beterbiev competed in the light-heavyweight class as an amateur, winning silver at the 2007 World Championships, gold at the 2008 World Cup, and 2009 World Championships, as well as gold in the 2006 and 2010 European Championships. Throughout his amateur career, Beterbiev competed as a heavyweight and light-heavyweight.
He defeated Kenneth Egan and Ismail Sillakh among others to win the 2006 European Amateur Boxing Championships. In 2006, he defeated Egor Mekhontsev but fell short against two-time winner Evgeny Makarenko.
Artur also defeated Sergey Kovalev, the eventual undisputed light-heavyweight champion, in the semi-finals in 2007 to get to the World Championships. He then defeated Evgeny Makarenko in the championship match. He met the unknown Abbos Atoev in the World Championships finals, but he lost in a shocker.
