In Goaso, Ahafo Region, a verbal spat has broken out over a disagreement over royalty, as the present Omanhene contests the royal position of the recent past Omanhene.
The current Omanhene, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah, and the former Omanhene, Nana Agyei Ampofo, are engaged in a bitter verbal argument over requirements to accede to the Goaso throne.
Nana Ampofo, a 77-year-old lawyer who served as a member of the Council of State under the Rawlings administration, claims to be descended from royalty and to be qualified to take the throne. Conversely, 58-year-old Nana Bosomprah disputes this assertion.
On January 12, 2024, the former Omanhene held a press conference in Goaso in response to a purported statement made by Nana Bosomprah, which sparked the verbal altercation. Before taking the throne, the latter allegedly wrote a document claiming that the former Omanhene was not a monarch.
In support of him, Nana Ampofo stressed his Goaso royal rank and made it clear that his abdication was a decision he made voluntarily.
The former Omanhene accused those connected to the present Omanhene of being involved in an attempted assassination that occurred one night in Kumasi during the chieftaincy conflict.
Additionally, he charged that Nana Bosomprah was operating an autocratic government in the palace since he denied his subchiefs a vote on crucial issues.
Nana Bosomprah responded the following day by calling a press conference and asserting that Nana Ampofo is not a royal.
Even though he denied ever hearing that Nana Ampofo sent a letter declaring he is not a royal, the Omanhene claimed that copies of the previously mentioned document are in the hands of some locals.
He added that in Asante custom, Goasohene is the principal Asantehene’s palm wine tapper.
The Omanhene continued to trace his ancestry, saying that the Asantehene’s main palmwine tapper is chosen only from his family.
“To demonstrate that Otumfuo’s chief palmwine tapper can be selected from his family, I challenge Nana Ampofo to also trace his lineage,” he lashes out.
Claims that Nana Bosomprah was planning to kill Nana Ampofo were denied, and he also denied being an autocrat.
