The Washington Nationals could be the latest American sports team to be sold.
The Lerner family, who owns the Nationals, is seriously considering selling the team and has recruited an investment bank to conduct due diligence on potential buyers and investors.
Despite this, Mark Lerner, managing principal owner, says that this is just an exploratory phase.
Are the Washington Nationals being sold?
The Lerner family reportedly paid $450 million for the Nationals in 2006.
In 2005, MLB relocated the team from Montreal to Washington, D.C., removing the Expos moniker and renaming the team the Nationals.
The Lerners were successful in outbidding numerous other ownership groups for the club.
Mark Lerner stated emphatically in 2018 that the Lerner family will never sell the Nationals.
Just a few years later, that perspective appears to have shifted, as the family is considering possibilities for selling the company.
Jennifer Giglio, a representative for the Nationals, said that the selling process would have no bearing on the organization’s day-to-day baseball choices.
