Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s prime minister, has resigned from his position amidst the ongoing economic crisis.
Are Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa brothers?
Mahinda Rajapaksa is the son of Sri Lankan politician, D. A. Rajapaksa. He was born into the politically established Rajapaksa family.
He is the second oldest of nine children which include six boys and three boys. His younger sibling, the fifth out of the nine children, is Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa following the rest of his family is a Sri Lankan politician. Since 2019, he has been serving as the 8th President of Sri Lanka and its 7th Executive President.
Prior to his role as the president, he served under the administration of his older brother Mahinda, who was also the former president of Sri Lanka. He has previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development from 2005 to 2015.
However, under Gotabaya’s administration by the end of 2021, Sri Lanka was facing its most severe economic crisis since its independence in 1948 due to loss of revenue from tax cuts, rampant money printing, and unsustainable borrowings.
