Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach’s terrible death on Monday appeared to affect the whole college football world. Yet, based on statements made by former President Donald Trump today, it’s clear that coach Leach’s influence extended far beyond the sidelines.
According to The Hill’s Elizabeth Crisp, Trump released a statement this morning in response to Leach’s death, thanking “an outstanding Patriot and Coach” for his support of his campaigns and country.
Are Donald Trump and Mike Leach friends?
Yes, it is obvious the late coach was a good friend to the US former president. Leach was a Trump fan who endorsed him for president, and he once stated that he and Trump had a connection for years. Leach stated that he came to New York about 6 years ago, at the time of his support, and met Trump in his office.
“Mike Leach was an incredible Patriot and Coach, with a big heart for our Country and for Football,” Trump said. “From the very beginning, Mike was on Team MAGA, because he believed in our Great American Dream, something he lived, and helped others to achieve for themselves. My deepest condolences to his wife, Sharon, and family. Coach Mike Leach will be missed by us all!”
What did Donald Trump say about Mike Leach?
Trump gave a video shout-out ahead of the Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma game in November 2008.
Trump, at that time, said, “Mike, you’re a friend of mine. You’re a great coach. Don’t do anything different. Just do whatever you’ve been doing, because whatever it is, it works. You’re an amazing guy. Motivate those players. You may very well come out with a victory.”
