Jim Breuer was originally cast as Dave Chappelle’s best friend but was fired just eight days before the premiere. The series was scheduled to premiere in April 1995. The premiere was postponed and the episodes were reshot with Chris Gartin in the role.
Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer were real-life friends at the time. Chappelle was so upset over Breuer’s firing that he wanted to quit the show. But his manager, Barry Katz, told Chappelle that he could not break his contract. Creator and producer Matt Williams told Chappelle that he would give him $10,000 if the show was not a hit. It is unknown if Chappelle ever collected the money.
