Irene Cara was an American singer and actress best remembered for her role as the main character in the 1980 film Fame, as well as for co-writing and performing the mega tune Flashdance… What a Feeling, for which she received an Oscar and a Grammy nomination.

Later in her career, she appeared in films alongside Clint Eastwood and Tatum O’Neal.

Cara’s publicist, who broke the news of her death, revealed that she died at home in Florida, but the cause is “currently unknown.”

Cara was born in New York City’s Bronx in 1959 and began her career on Spanish-language television. Her father was from Puerto Rico, while her mother was from Cuba.

She went on to perform in a number of off-Broadway shows after recording songs in both Spanish and English as a child.

Cara came to notoriety in 1980, when she earned the role of Coco Hernandez and performed the Fame theme song.

Her performance garnered her a nomination for Best Actress at the 1981 Golden Globes.

Cara later co-wrote and sang the vocals for the 1983 song Flashdance… What A Feeling, which won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Irene Cara, 63, has died.
