Appointments Committee of Parliament suspends vetting of Supreme Court nominees

The Appointments Committee of Parliament faced a deadlock on Tuesday during the vetting process of two Supreme Court Judge nominees proposed by the President.

Justice Sophia Rosseta Bernasko Essah, a Court of Appeal Judge, and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic and fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts Sciences, were scheduled for vetting but the session was suspended due to disagreements between members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Majority.

The Vice Chairperson of the Appointments Committee, Mrs. Patricia Appiagyei, had to halt the proceedings for further consultations after heated arguments erupted between the Minority and Majority members. The nominees were not allowed into the meeting as the clash continued, with Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minority, emphasizing the need for a thorough and diligent vetting process.

Dr. Forson accused Mrs. Appiagyei of unilaterally setting the vetting date without consulting the Committee, stating that proper procedures and protocols were not followed. He urged for transparency and adherence to the law, highlighting the significance of upholding democracy in Ghana.

The NDC Member of Parliament, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, echoed the call for a comprehensive vetting process and emphasized the importance of the Committee carrying out its duties without external influence. Meanwhile, Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, assured that the matter would be resolved through discussions between the Committee leaders.

As the impasse continues, it is evident that the vetting process for the Supreme Court Judge nominees remains contentious and highlights the need for adherence to legal procedures and transparency in the appointment process.
