Millions of iPhone users are set to receive payments in a settlement related to the “batterygate” issue involving older iPhone models experiencing slowed performance after software updates.

Apple has agreed to pay out between $310 million and $500 million to around 3 million users of pre-2018 iPhones who filed claims against the company in 2020.

The issue, referred to as “batterygate,” stemmed from software updates provided by Apple for older iPhone models with deteriorating batteries.

These updates intentionally slowed down the phones’ performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns caused by aging batteries during periods of high demand.

The settlement follows a judge’s decision to dismiss Apple’s appeal to challenge a class-action lawsuit from 2017.

The lawsuit alleged that Apple’s software updates caused the throttling of device performance without proper user notification.
