Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been fined by the state of New York for evading tax warrants issued against her previous firm five years ago,
On July 6, 2017, the state issued a tax warrant against Brook Avenue Press, a children-focused publishing business Ocasio-Cortez created in 2012, to recover over a thousand dollars in unpaid corporation taxes, according to some sources. Due to the representative’s failure to pay the taxes, the tax warrant’s price has increased to more than two grand.
Companies that fail to quickly settle their debt and do not reply to their letters in New York will be served with more tax warrants and will face further action deemed appropriate by the New York Department of Taxation and Finance.
The New York representative called for increased taxes for the wealthy at the very top. She appeared at the annual Met Gala wearing a white dress with the words “Tax The Rich” written across the back in large, red letters.
