Sissala East MP and Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, has spoken out against LGBTQ+ practices, stating that he has no interest in intimate relationships with a man.
During an appearance on The Key Points, Mr. Chinnia emphasized that he believes same-sex attraction is a sign of mental illness and commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for rejecting LGBTQ+ practices.
As a public figure, Mr. Chinnia highlighted that declaring support for LGBT activities would hinder his ability to effectively serve his constituents. He also noted that no NPP MP has openly supported LGBTQ+ practices.
The Deputy Minister firmly stated, “I see it as illness when a man is attracted to a man or a woman is attracted to a woman, it means that there is something wrong with your mind.”
Regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, pressure is mounting on Vice President Bawumia to advise President Akufo-Addo to sign the bill into law. In response to these calls, Mr. Chinnia urged Ghanaians to be fair to Dr. Bawumia and acknowledged the constitutional constraints that limit the power of key government officials.
Meanwhile, the Communications Director for the NPP 2024 Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, expressed confidence that President Akufo-Addo would approve the anti-LGBTQ+ bill if it reaches his desk. The Deputy Minister reiterated his support for Dr. Bawumia’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues, emphasizing the importance of respecting the Vice President’s position.
