Anthony Holden was born in Southport, Lancashire, on May 22, 1947, to John Holden, an officer in the Manchester Regiment, and Margaret Lois, the daughter of Olympic gold medallist and England international football player Ivan Sharpe, who later became a well-known sports writer.
