Edwards was Anthony Edwards was born in Santa Barbara, California, and spent his childhood there. He comes from an artistic family and is of Irish descent. Before beginning a career in acting, he received his theater training at the University of Southern California (USC), where he also attended college. At the age of 19, he had already amassed sufficient funds from his many supporting parts to withdraw from college.

Edwards and his family relocated from California to New York City after the cancellation of ER in 2009, and he then took a lengthy break from acting in order to focus on being a father to his kids and bringing them up away from the spotlight.
